The purpose of this "education"
web site is not as conventional as one might think. When we
approach the subject of risk management it is not always a matter
of giving medical knowledge or teaching in the usual sense.
When a bad outcome occurs it is not always due to a lack of
academic knowledge, but often a defect in the thinking process.
There are often pitfalls identified when a case is reviewed
and the physician involved analyzes his or her thinking process.
Certainly there are times when a bias in thinking leads the
doctor down the wrong road, or because of pressures such as
work load a road is not taken which should have been traveled.
There are two major forms that the presentations
herein will take initially. One will be to review basic medical
knowledge as it relates to high risk medical cases and the next
will be to review cases where a pitfall or omission has taken
place and attempt to analyze why or to point out how it can
be prevented.
In most instances actual case files
are used. If you recognize them or are familiar with them, rest
assured that the purpose of presenting them is so that we can
all learn from each others mistakes and nothing more.
The content contained herein as with
all areas of medical practice is subject to controversy and opinion
and may at times be unintentionally erroneous. Your feedback
is welcome. Keep in mind that the goal of these excercises
is not so much to answer questions or to be evaluated formally
as much as to stimulate your thought process regarding high
risk medical practices and how to prevent bad outcomes.
